contentment

Contentment. Ah... Contentment is a deep relaxation after that long struggle, the effort that was made to find happiness. There is a background tension; a subtle struggle going on deep within, until at last, that struggle dissolves. The effort melts away and what is left is a deep undercurrent of contentment. No asking for more; no wishing for things to be different; just a bedrock of happiness and relaxation. When we are at ease in the world; when we feel nourished, all our needs taken care of; where then is the space for any anguish? Once the anguish is gone, what is left in its place is contentment.

It is such a relief; a relief from having to make such an effort, all the time, out of fear, really. When the fear has gone, then this contentment will be felt. And what is the fear? Just a mistrust, distrust of existence, with no foundation in reality. Allow all that to melt away. Let go of it. Just relax into your own being; and the wholeness of your own being. With that relaxation – with that sense of being at ease with the world and with yourself – in that easiness of life, there you will find a deep, deep contentment, which cannot be shaken by the ripples of surface emotions, the day-to-day happenstances of life. This contentment is like a deep ocean current, always there; accessible whenever we can just relax into the moment, accepting whatever is happening; being at ease.

Yes, my friends, the lucky ones live in contentment; an unshakeable contentment. May you also know this, come to this space. For it is the great gift of existence, that we should not only be but that we should enjoy being. And this contentment is the basis of that joy, that happiness, that life is all about. You won’t find it anywhere else but deep in your own being.
